Under general direction, Carpenter Supervisor I supervises the activities of carpenters and other craft workers engaged in the maintenance and repair of city structures, historic buildings, installations, facilities and equipment, including transit equipment, both in shops and on‑site. The position supervises 7344 Carpenters and other craft workers.
Key Duties- Plan, prioritize and schedule work to meet production targets; assign and direct carpenters on maintenance and repair projects.
- Estimate time and materials on requested work orders.
- Inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure quality and adherence to specifications; develop work schedules and plans.
- Requisition materials and equipment; justify and estimate future equipment and material needs.
- Record hours worked and prepare required reports.
- Instruct employees in the safe operation of shop equipment and assure adherence to safe work practices; administer Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
- Assist in the development, motivation and advancement of subordinates through training and effective use employee development programs; administer performance appraisals; resolve employee problems; assure adherence to shop rules, policies, etc.
- Coordinate work plans with engineers, architects and other technical experts; maintain regular contact with other departments, outside organizations and the public.
- Use personal computer to prepare a variety of reports and memos and write correspondence using e‑mail.
- May perform carpenter duties as necessary and other related duties.
- Education: Completion of a four‑year recognized carpenter apprenticeship program.
- Experience: Four years of experience as a journey‑level carpenter (helper experience does not qualify).
- License: Valid California driver license.
Substitution: Additional qualifying journey‑level carpenter experience may be substituted for the required apprenticeship program on a year‑for‑year basis.
Selection ProceduresThe selection process includes a written trade supervisory examination and a written performance examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the following examinations:
- Trade Supervisory Written Examination (50%): A remote computer exam covering supervisory practices, customer service, leadership behavior, subordinate evaluation, and reading comprehension.
- Written Performance Examination (50%): An in‑person computer exam measuring knowledge of building codes, tools, materials, equipment, safety practices, written communication, and planning and organization skills.
Candidates must achieve a passing score on both examinations to be placed on the eligible list.
