The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco and is governed by a Commission of five members appointed by the Mayor. It oversees a broad range of waterfront commercial, maritime, and public access facilities held in public trust. The Port’s jurisdiction covers approximately 7.5 miles of waterfront from Pier 98 to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Maintenance Division

The Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the Port's waterfront property as a positive connection to other parts of the City. Over 100 skilled craftsmen work to preserve and improve fishing harbors, ferry landings, public parks, cargo terminals, piers, promenades, and buildings, employing trades such as carpentry, electrical, painting, gardening, iron work, plumbing, roofing, and more.

Job Description

Under the general direction and supervision of the Piledriver Supervisor, the Piledriver Engine Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes that support pile driving operations. The position may work independently or as part of a piledriving crew, performing duties related to the repair and construction of piers, wharves, and related substructures, and may assist with placing, driving, and capping piles;

laying stringers and decking; framing timbers; and the demolition and removal of damaged structural members.

Duties
  • Safely operates and maintains barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes; drives forklifts and/or Port vehicles, and/or small boats.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of cranes and piledriving equipment.
  • Fuels cranes.
  • Conducts pre- and post-operational checks of the entire crane system.
  • Participates in the inspection and certification of cranes and auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required of Class 9331 Piledriver Engine Operator.
Nature of the Work

May require working under adverse weather conditions, on weekends, and long hours outside regular scheduled shifts.

Qualifications Experience

Three (3) years certified crane operator experience on barge-mounted and mobile land-based cranes used for piledriving.

License and Certification
  • Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver's license (to be presented at time of employment). Applicants must be insurable under the Port's liability insurance and maintain insurability throughout employment.
  • Possession of National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) certificates, including the following designations as required by CalOSHA:
    • LBT – Lattice Boom Truck Cranes
    • LBC – Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes
    • TSS – Small Telescopic Boom Cranes (less than 17.5 ton)
    • TLL – Large Telescopic Boom Cranes (more than 17.5 ton)

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (based on a 40-hour work week). Overtime hours above 40 hours per week are not included in this calculation.

Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card

This position requires unescorted access to the Port’s Maritime Transportation System (MTS). An application for a TWIC card may be submitted after employment has commenced. The incumbent must undergo a criminal history check, immigration check, and terrorist threat assessment, including FBI fingerprints, to determine eligibility for security clearance. Failure to acquire or maintain a TWIC card may be the basis for termination.
