Job Summary

A heavy equipment operator operates various heavy equipment in construction, maintenance, and repair activities, including trenching, excavation, grading, bulldozing, and paving.

Reports to

Foreman, General Superintendent, Group Manager.

Key Communication Partners

Laborers, Foreman, General Superintendent.

Typical Duties

Operate heavy equipment of various sizes for loading, hauling, and unloading materials and supplies.

Operate equipment such as backhoe, road grader, front-end loader, hydraulic excavator, skid steer loader, bulldozer, roller, compactor, and crane.

Assist crew in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting materials, and related tasks.

Perform routine equipment inspections and report defects.

Follow safety standards and protocols.

Engage in physical activities like climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and handling materials.

Handle, install, and position materials and operate machines using hands and arms.

Contribute to team efforts, build morale, and maintain a positive team environment.

Prioritize and plan work activities efficiently.

Ensure accuracy and quality, seek improvements, and apply feedback.

Participate actively in safety programs like “Safety Bucks.”

Maintain punctuality, follow instructions, and work long hours when necessary.

Lift, push, pull, and carry objects, including lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.

Qualifications

Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disabilities.

Education and experience in operating heavy equipment required.

English understanding related to safety and job duties.

Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.

Apply common sense to follow instructions and handle standard situations.

No specific computer skills required.

Interpersonal skills: conflict resolution, dependability, thoroughness.

No licenses or certifications required.

Compensation

$54 - $61 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
