Position Description
Levine Lab – Electrophysiologist (Assistant Professional Researcher)
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California, San Francisco
The Levine Lab is seeking a skilled and motivated Electrophysiologist. Applications are being accepted for the position of Assistant Professional Researcher.
Key Responsibilities- Ion Channel Biophysics:
Conduct electrophysiological experiments using patch-clamp techniques to investigate ion channel properties and gating mechanisms in sensory neurons. - Calcium Imaging:
Use calcium imaging techniques (e.g., Fura-2, Fluo-4, GCaMP) to study intracellular calcium dynamics in nociceptors. - Neurophysiology:
Investigate the role of ion channels in pain sensation and neural signaling by examining neuronal responses to pharmacological agents and mechanical, thermal, and chemical nociceptive stimuli. - Human Sensory Neurons:
Utilize primary human sensory neurons to study specific ion channel function. - Data Analysis:
Analyze large datasets from electrophysiology, imaging, and molecular experiments using appropriate software (e.g., MATLAB, Clampfit, Image
J). - Collaboration:
Work alongside cross-disciplinary teams, including pharmacologists, molecular biologists, and computational biologists, to achieve research objectives. - Documentation & Reporting:
Prepare research reports, manuscripts for publication, and contribute to grant writing and lab compliance (e.g., IACUC, biohazard, BUA).
- Doctorate in Physiology, Neuroscience, Biophysics, or a related field, plus 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Proficient in electrophysiology techniques (e.g., patch-clamp) and calcium imaging (e.g., Fura-2, GCaMP).
- Strong understanding of ion channel function and neuronal signaling pathways, especially in nociceptors.
- Data analysis familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, Clampfit, and Image
J. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing research reports, publications, and institutional compliance.
- Advanced expertise in ion channel biophysics and electrophysiology.
- Experience working with rodent models and human primary sensory neurons, in vitro.
- Familiarity with calcium channels and their role in neuronal function is highly desirable but not required.
- Strong publication record in relevant fields (e.g., ion channel function in human and rodent nociceptors).
- Experience with managing projects and timelines, proactively identifying potential research issues and troubleshooting.
- Ability to train junior associates and productively manage project progress.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
See Table 13B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $93,400-$122,100.
