Position Description

Manager, Quantitative Metabolite Analysis Center

The Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine (BCMM) at the Parnassus campus of UCSF is recruiting an analytical chemist to serve as Manager for the Quantitative Metabolite Analysis Center and to conduct microbiome research.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $73,000-$188,200.

Responsibilities
  • Metabolomics Research: Conduct specialized research studies related to the production, identification, and quantification of microbial‑derived metabolites and their impact on the prediction, prevention, and treatment of human disease. Develop and implement novel metabolomics tools to address ongoing challenges in the field. Disseminate study findings through presentations and publications. Contribute to research funding proposals to sustain and grow research activities.
  • Service: Serve as a team expert in metabolomics. Develop and lead training opportunities in metabolomics for UCSF trainees and staff. Participate in professional societies and review research proposals/manuscripts related to metabolomics.
  • Facility Management: Oversee all operations for the Quantitative Metabolite Analysis Center (QMAC), including training and supervision of hub staff. Provide study design consultation, sample processing, data generation, analyses, interpretation, and project reports to users. Manage user projects, QMAC funds and billing. Develop and implement novel metabolomics tools to address ongoing challenges in the field.

Candidates will be expected to work independently and in a collaborative multidisciplinary team of microbial genomicists, microbiologists, immunologists, analytical chemists, and biostatisticians. The Manager will supervise a staff research assistant and summer interns. Opportunities for career development will be provided and encouraged. The candidate will report to the Assistant Director of the Quantitative Metabolite Analysis Center in the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine.

Qualifications
  • For Associate rank:
    Master’s degree (or equivalent) or at least 5‑10 years of experience in relevant specialization.
  • For Full rank:
    Terminal degree (or equivalent) or at least 10 years of experience in relevant specialization.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, interpret, evaluate, and present research findings in a variety of formats including manuscripts, grant proposals, reports to stakeholders, and oral presentations, and to facilitate collaborative and instructional scientific interactions within laboratory and discussion settings.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
