Seasonal Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard)
These positions are located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Division of Visitor and Resource Protection. Expected Entry on Duty:
April 2026. Positions are temporary seasonal, not to exceed 1,039 hours in a service year. Employment dates vary by site.
- Performs as an open water/ocean lifeguard, meeting USLA standards for a Seasonal Open Water Lifeguard.
- Ensures all aquatic rescue and emergency equipment is maintained and stored.
- Responds to a wide variety of emergency search and rescue situations.
- Assists with instruction and supervision of Volunteer in the Park (VIP) program.
- Provides visitor information.
- Assists Law Enforcement staff with enforcement of rules and regulations in designated aquatic areas and resource protection.
- Educates visitors about life habits and behavior of Park fauna.
- Provides informal and formal interpretive and information services concerning marine resources and aquatic safety.
- Prepares case incident reports.
- Assists other agencies.
- Conducts traffic control for vehicle accidents.
- Complies with OSHA programs within the park.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation; must meet Selective Service registration for males.
- Must participate in Direct Deposit program and wear uniform per NPS standards; uniform allowance provided.
- Must be available to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work.
- Age 18 or older (or age 16 with specific educational criteria).
- Drug test required and ongoing compliance with random testing.
- Pre‑employment medical required, if not within last 3 years.
- Physical fitness per USLA/ARC/Other guidelines; must pass pre‑employment test and be able to swim 500 m in ten minutes.
- Exposed to high‑risk situations requiring personal protective gear.
- GS‑5:
Must have a valid state driver’s license; may need to submit driving records. - GS‑6:
Must have valid driver’s license and submit motor vehicle records. - Extra:
Must possess USLA or ARC lifeguard certification and EMT or higher. - Provide legible copies of lifeguard and EMT certificates.
- Minimum experience:
at least one year specialized experience equivalent to GS‑4 (for GS‑5) or GS‑5 (for GS‑6); includes ocean lifeguard duties. - Education options: 4‑year degree or combination of education and experience meeting specific ratio requirements.
