Overview

We are seeking an experienced Animal Care Technician to join a growing team in the San Francisco area. These individuals will play a key role in supporting biomedical research by ensuring the highest standards of animal care and facility operations. Candidates should be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and eager to develop into leadership roles over time.

This position requires reliable transportation, as daily travel to various client sites in the greater San Francisco area is expected. Work schedules typically begin between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM. Mileage reimbursement is provided.

Base pay range

$27.00/hr - $32.00/hr

Job Summary

The Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing daily husbandry and care for research animals. This includes feeding, watering, cage changing, cleaning, and monitoring animal health. The role requires a passion for animal welfare, a strong sense of responsibility, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment. Technicians will collaborate with team members and contribute to a supportive and professional work culture.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform routine animal husbandry, including cage changing, feeding, watering, and health monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records (census sheets, logs, cage cards, inventories).
  • Sanitize and decontaminate animal facilities and equipment.
  • Follow biosafety and room entry procedures.
  • Properly dispose of waste according to SOPs.
  • Receive and house incoming animal shipments.
  • Maintain and clean animal racks and support equipment.
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, and stocking supplies.
  • Carry out basic animal health treatments under veterinary supervision.
  • Conduct daily health checks and promptly report any concerns to supervisors or veterinary staff.
  • Maintain accurate daily animal census counts.
  • Humanely euthanize animals as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned under supervision.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (some animal care/research experience preferred).
  • Hands-on experience in animal husbandry and/or research with mammals.
  • Strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and ability to follow SOPs.
  • Basic computer and communication skills (Office Suite, email, phone).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, climb, and stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness to wear full PPE (mask, coveralls, gloves) for prolonged periods.
Work Schedule
  • Weekend and holiday coverage is required.
  • Extra hours may be needed for emergencies or study-related activities.
  • Standard shifts follow either a Sunday–Thursday or Tuesday–Saturday schedule.
