Overview
The registered nurse (RN, RN II, RN III) performs professional nursing activities in the care of patients to help them achieve or regain, and maintain, maximum physical, emotional or social function. Role functions are governed by the Nurse Practice Act, applicable Administrative Code, and hospital policies. The RN may seek consultation with other health team members as the patient’s condition and treatment goals warrant.
The RN collaborates with the Patient Accounts department to provide patient information to ensure compliance with federal and state statutes.
- Complete initial assessments and document as required.
- Collect, record, and analyze pertinent data for admission, in accordance with hospital policy.
- Assess patient strengths and limitations, cultural, spiritual, and ethnic factors, discharge needs, medical/physical status, medication history and current schedule, and age-specific data.
- Involve patient’s support systems (family, friends) in assessment and documentation; observe interactions and obtain data when appropriate.
- Act as an advocate for patients: explain rights, obtain signatures on consents, protect privacy and confidentiality, provide patient orientation.
- Know and apply hospital policies on unit safety, admission procedures, and conduct proceedings respectfully.
- Initiate and update treatment plans and documentation; participate in planning and modifying the plan of care; review and update goals as indicated; write clear treatment goals for each problem.
- Identify, interpret, and document information from nursing interviews, observations, assessments, and collaborate with other health professionals; review lab data and follow up with doctors; evaluate fall risk and initiate precautions; identify suicidality or other safety concerns.
- Implement patient care with safe medication administration: ensure accuracy, maintain knowledge of medications, transcribe and implement orders, monitor for adverse effects and interactions, educate patients about medications, and stay current on pharmacologic knowledge.
- Identify health education needs before discharge and implement age-appropriate teaching; document in patient record and treatment plan; organize care according to priorities and unit needs; ensure EMTALA compliance when applicable; adhere to nursing and hospital standards; maintain safety and infection control practices; participate in continuing education and in-service programs.
- Assist in developing and implementing unit standards of care and participate in unit committees or projects; provide leadership in patient care, staff operations, and department organization; assume Charge Nurse responsibilities as needed.
- Coordinate unit activities, participate in crisis management, admissions, and communication of unit status; manage therapeutic milieu and assign patient care to support continuity and safety.
- Demonstrate professional leadership, participate in projects, and pursue ongoing professional development; support changes in staffing to meet patient needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred. Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of employment; license in good standing.
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification (or enrolling within 30 days of hire); bi-annual re-certification required.
- Formal training in management of the aggressive patient within 60 days of hire; annual re-certification required.
- Previous psychiatric experience with children, adolescents, and adults preferred.
- May be required to hold a qualified medical professional (QMP) designation as determined by Hospital policies; competency evaluated annually.
- Employees at Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs licensed under applicable regulations.
- 40 hours of relevant psychiatric nursing training or one year of clinical experience with children in mental health disorders.
Compensation for this role ranges from $54.46 to $73.19 per hour. The location operates under a collective bargaining agreement determining wage placement. New hires start at a rate on the scale with placement at the appropriate step; internal hires’ wages align with their years of service.
