The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout theCity, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.
The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Servicesoperatesin conjunction with SFHN andprovidesa range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

Under general nursing and medical direction, utilizing standardized procedures, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings.
The essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Provides routine preventative and continuity of care to adult and/or pediatric patients; this may include complete history and physical examinations.
- Orders diagnostic tests, which may include laboratory tests, X-rays and other imaging, E.K.G.’s, and other disease or condition specific diagnostic tests.
- Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty.
- Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients.
- Acute care planning for patients in an inpatient setting.
- Assesses and diagnosis, develops treatment plans, and furnishes medications.
- Counsels and educates patients, and collaborates with healthcare team.
- Consults with physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of unstable and complex patient conditions.
- Documents medical records and adheres to patient privacy.
- Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities.
The 2328 Nurse Practitioner (All Specialties) may perform other duties as assigned/required.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- LICENSE*: Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing;
AND - LICENSE*: Possession of a current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing;
AND - CERTIFICATION: Possession of national board certification, or eligibility, as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization:
- American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
- American Nurses Association – American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
