About The Role

Gladstone Institutes is an independent, nonprofit research organization located in the San Francisco Bay Area’s epicenter of biomedical and technological innovation.
We are seeking a collaborative and detail-driven Accounting Manager to play a critical leadership role within our Finance team. This position blends hands-on technical accounting, people management, and process improvement, offering the opportunity to shape how a complex research organization operates and grows.
As Accounting Manager, you will oversee core accounting operations while helping strengthen controls, improve systems, and support organizational decision-making.
What You Will Do
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, partnering cross-functionally to ensure accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting
- Review monthly balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy, proper GAAP classification, and appropriate program coding
- Manage and mentor the accounts payable and accounts receivable team, ensuring smooth daily operations and high service standards
- Prepare and review complex accounting journal entries, including allocations, accruals, reclassifications, and recurring entries
- Serve as the accounting owner for the Core Facility Management software (iLabs), including user management, invoice reconciliation, and issue resolution
- Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls by identifying gaps and implementing practical, scalable solutions
- Partner with external auditors by responding to requests and supporting audit schedule preparation
- Assist with annual tax filings, including Forms 990, 1099, 1098, and 1042
- Contribute to special projects and process improvements as the organization evolves
What You Will Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; CPA or CPA candidate strongly preferred
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit experience preferred and public accounting a plus
- Prior people management experience with a demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff
- Strong command of U.S. GAAP and technical accounting concepts
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner effectively across all levels of the organization
- Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple priorities
- Advanced Excel skills;
Workday experience a plus
Salary Range
$123K - $150K
