The Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a non‑profit, multi‑site community health organization offering comprehensive health services in the Mission and Excelsior Districts of San Francisco. The center provides primary health care, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN, HIV and homeless services and advocates for health equity.

Primary Objective

Under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller provides financial leadership and oversees day‑to‑day accounting functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP, timely financial reporting, and strong internal controls. Responsibilities include managing month‑ and year‑end close processes, tax reporting, grant budgets and invoices, payroll, accounts payable, procurement, and preparation of audit worksheets. The Controller supervises six or more direct reports and must be able to perform all roles as backup to streamline processes and improve efficiency.

Functions / Responsibilities Supervision – 30%
  • Payroll, grant management, accounts payable, and purchasing functions of the organization. Ensure all bills, expense reports, timesheets, and other payments are processed in a timely and accurate manner. Accounts receivable: ensure receipts are posted accurately and daily.
  • Grant management: prepare budgets, receivables and revenue reporting, ensure compliance with regulations, and guide Program Directors regarding their grants.
  • Take ownership of all term‑end close activities.
  • Coach and educate staff on policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Evaluate direct reports within designated time frames, providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and supervision.
Primary Functions – 70%
  • Close the books each month and at year‑end, ensuring proper recognition and recording of all financial transactions by the set timelines.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations on all balance sheet accounts and other accounts each month.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for board committees and other special reports as needed.
  • Maintain the 3rd party and patient pay revenue reconciliation on a monthly basis.
  • Supervise and update the fixed assets system and coordinate the annual physical inventory process.
  • Prepare and submit all federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring compliance with applicable filing requirements.
  • Ensure all schedule and work papers are prepared and ready for the annual financial and 401(k) audits.
  • Act as the primary for reporting functionality, creating reports, updates, and maintenance in the Abila MIP accounting software.
  • Lead financial audits and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting and planning process; review all financial plans and compare actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances.
  • Perform other financial or operational related activities as assigned by the CFO.
