The Building Engineer maintains, operates, and optimizes our facility's critical systems to ensure safety, efficiency, and comfort. They are the technical authority for all SF SPCA building equipment and systems including BMS, HVAC, electrical, energy management, lighting, plumbing, elevators, facilities security technology, and key management. The Building Engineer handles project management and complex troubleshooting with support from a team of Building Engineering Technicians as well as outside vendor maintenance contracts.
They also take a lead role in fire safety, emergency planning, threat assessment, and lead all space allocation changes across SF SPCA property. They develop and manage all building documentation, equipment compliance, certifications, and maintenance schedules. They identify and elevate campus improvement initiatives while working collaboratively with their team and peers across the organization. This role reports to the Senior Director of Facilities and Supply Chain Management.
Responsibilities Building Systems Maintenance and Management
- Responsible for preventive and routine maintenance and repair of HVAC/mechanical systems, plant system controls, plumbing, electrical equipment, backup power generators, solar arrays, interior/exterior gates, roller doors, and elevators; schedules and manages annual elevator inspections.
- Responsible for fire and life safety systems, including fire alarms, sprinklers, fire control panels, and extinguishers; manages responses to fire alarms and emergencies; coordinates fire department visits, safety inspections, and vendor relationships for quarterly and annual inspections.
- Maintains the organization’s vehicle fleet, including scheduling repairs, servicing, and registrations.
- Completes carpentry and millwork projects, including millwork installation and counter replacement.
- Co‑responsible for warehouse management alongside the Facilities Operations Manager and Supply Chain and Purchasing Manager, including safe and efficient use of space, warehouse equipment, and vehicles.
- Responsible for security vendor regarding intrusion, work collaboratively with IT team to maintain safe and efficient electronic door security plan.
- Maintain database and key exchange system. Maintain control of key issuance and return so that the organization’s members and belongings remain safe.
- Maintain control of key cylinder tracking, and provide lock installation and re‑keying services.
- Ensures a safe work environment by serving on the Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee and following OSHA regulations and all safety guidelines for projects, equipment operation, and chemical usage, including labeling, storage, disposal, and use of personal protective equipment; models safe work practices and takes immediate action to correct safety noncompliance that could put employees, volunteers, clients, animals, or the organization at risk.
- Responds to all facility emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
- Work collaboratively and creatively with the Facilities Operations Manager and Facilities Dispatcher to coordinate schedules, technician workloads, and staffing coverage in support of the Society’s facilities and infrastructure goals and management.
