Job Summary
The Network Administrator within UCSF’s Information Technology department will manage and maintain UCSF's network wired services to ensure seamless connectivity and efficient communication across campus. The Network Administrator will implement and support network solutions, troubleshoot network issues, optimize performance, and implement security measures to safeguard UCSF data. This role will ensure the IT infrastructure is operable, secure, and efficient in service of the university’s academic, medical, and research mission.
The position supports faculty, staff, and students and models UCSF’s culture and values. The final salary and offer components are subject to UC policy and approvals. Your placement within the salary range depends on work experience and internal equity. For represented positions, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement rules. The annual salary range is $90,700 - $193,500 (Annual Rate).

University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading academic healthcare organization. Infrastructure Services (IS) provides 24x7 support to the University community, upholding responsiveness and reliability. The Network Services team manages UCSF’s network infrastructure, ensuring reliable technical accessibility for medical and health research work. Core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, troubleshoot network issues, optimize performance, and implement protocols.
They oversee software and hardware updates, manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience, and provide specialized technical support to other employees, especially those in medical and health research.
- Bachelor’s Degree, or four years of relevant experience in computer science, engineering, or computer information systems.
- Three years or more of experience in network services, information technology, or network operations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional communications and network concepts to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity, and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
- Understanding of various network hardware platforms, network-related protocols, and software.
- Experience with network diagnostic and performance management tools and software.
- Ability to gather, organize, and analyze data for functional assignments.
- Proven ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills to convey technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Experience configuring, managing, and troubleshooting network devices (routers, switches, wireless equipment, load balancers, DDI platforms, and/or network monitoring tools).
- Knowledge of networking protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, VLANs, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, and SNMP.
- Ability to work onsite when required.
- Experience with network monitoring and management tools (e.g., Nagios, Cacti, Spectrum, Datadog, Solar Winds, PRTG, or Cisco Prime).
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose wired and wireless network connectivity issues in a timely manner.
- Familiarity with network best practices and the ability to implement and maintain network infrastructure configurations, load balancers, DDI platforms, and/or network automation tools.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work with colleagues and stakeholders across departments.
- Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware or Hyper-V).
- Familiarity with cloud networking concepts and experience with cloud service providers (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
