The HR Manager serves as the key HR leader for the plant, responsible for overseeing employee relations, labor relations, talent management, staffing, training, compliance, and HR operations. This role requires a strong leader who can balance people‑first support with consistent application of policies, labor contracts, and regulatory requirements in a unionized food production setting.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as the primary HR contact for a union workforce of approximately 120 employees.
- Interpret and apply the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), ensuring fairness, consistency, and compliance.
- Coach supervisors and managers on labor relations, performance management, coaching, and disciplinary actions.
- Manage grievance procedures, investigations, and corrective actions in partnership with union representatives.
- Promote a positive workplace culture while maintaining strong relationships with both hourly and leadership teams.
- Lead full‑cycle recruiting for production, maintenance, sanitation, and leadership roles.
- Ensure staffing levels support production demands and minimize overtime or downtime.
- Manage onboarding, orientation, and training programs to ensure employee readiness and retention.
- Partner with department leaders to develop workforce planning strategies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws (FLSA, OSHA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, etc.).
- Maintain accurate HRIS data, personnel files, employee records, and reporting.
- Oversee adherence to GMPs, food safety policies, and plant safety requirements.
- Support audits, inspections, and documentation needed for USDA/OSHA/SQF/BRC compliance.
- Coordinate performance review processes and assist managers with coaching and development plans.
- Identify training needs and organize skills development, safety training, and leadership programs.
- Assist in developing and implementing employee engagement and retention initiatives.
- Partner with corporate HR/payroll teams to ensure accurate weekly payroll for union employees.
- Support benefits enrollment, workers’ compensation cases, leave of absence administration, and return‑to‑work programs.
- Ensure consistent application of company policies and procedures.
- Lead HR initiatives that support plant goals related to productivity, safety, culture, and employee experience.
- Use data‑driven insights to improve retention, reduce absenteeism, and strengthen workforce planning.
- Drive continuous improvement in HR processes, onboarding, communication, and employee support.
- 5+ years of HR experience in manufacturing (food or USDA‑regulated highly preferred).
- Strong experience working with or managing a union workforce preferred.
- Knowledge of labor laws, OSHA, GMPs, and HR best practices.
- Strong communication, leadership, conflict resolution, and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience with HRIS systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑volume production environment.
- Experience in food manufacturing, meat processing, beverage, or CPG operations.
- Prior involvement in collective bargaining, negotiations, or labor strategy.
- HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM‑CP/SCP).
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a strong plus.
