Position: ADMITTING WORKER PRN

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Admission and Registration Supervisor in collaboration with the Patient Care Unit Manager, the Principal Admitting Worker is generally assigned a primary work unit, but may rotate or be assigned to any area or site as outlined in the Admitting Department Expectations. The Principal Admitting Worker is responsible for greeting, patient identification, check-in, and registering patients, and coordinating escort upon arrival for services and/or after triage by the nurse.

The registration process includes gathering financial and demographic information, cash collection, and entering it into the computer system quickly and accurately. The Principal Admitting Worker must understand their role and provide superior customer service while maintaining a high degree of professionalism. He or she is required to utilize a variety of hospital information systems to effectively communicate with patients and visitors and to effectively respond to inquiries.

The Admitting Representative must comply with all guidelines put forth by the Medical Center Policies and Procedures.

All Admitting Workers have a critical influence on a patient’s health care experience in our Medical Center and must act as an ambassador of services. The incumbent is responsible to meet patient needs, demonstrating a willingness to learn new skills, and fostering a harmonious work environment in which high-quality patient care and customer service are consistently provided. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, physicians, other disciplines, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback professionally.

This position requires cross-training in Financial Counseling and assisting with Senior Admitting functions as needed. Financial Counselor duties include screening and assigning patient liabilities for all emergent, urgent, and self-pay patients, processing reservations, confirming insurance eligibility and benefits, and securing authorizations. The Financial Counselor counsels patients and/or their families regarding their financial liability and secures deposits on self-pay and/or collects patient liability portions for routine/elective admissions.

The incumbent will also screen all incoming patient transfers to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Pediatric access center duties include procuring the assignment of beds from nursing units for incoming patients, tracking patient flow throughout the hospital, and performing census reconciliation.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and this position classification s position is represented by a labor union; placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The hourly range for this position is $38.28-$47.88, depending on relevant experience.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years of Admitting Worker exp. and two years of exp. at the Senior Admitting Worker level OR an Associate's degree plus two years of experience working in a Senior Admitting Worker level/role.
  • Proficiency in health insurance eligibility and authorization requirements and reimbursement financial policies.
  • Experience handling Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers.
  • Knowledge of office machines; basic Personal Computer skills and the ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute.
  • Ability to problem solve; ability to analyze data and recommend changes
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize
  • Ability to follow instructions; work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment
