Job Summary:
Employment Duration: 3 months. Within the Department of Neurological Surgery, the Brain and Spinal Injury Center (BASIC) is a large clinical and research division consisting of physicians, nurses, research faculty, staff, and trainees. The Medical Assistant III plays a key role in supporting multidisciplinary care teams serving patients with complex, chronic, and serious health conditions. Under the supervision of the Manager and guided by Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, the Medical Assistant III actively participates in quality improvement initiatives and assists in coordinating patient care across UCSF Medical Center practices.
This role serves as a primary liaison between providers and patients, ensuring effective communication, coordination of services, and advocacy to address medical and psychosocial needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate care for patients both on and off the daily clinic schedule, particularly those with complex or chronic conditions
- Serve as a primary conduit of information between patients, families, and care providers
- Support multidisciplinary quality improvement efforts to enhance patient health outcomes
- Provide patient advocacy, education, and referral services as needed

Department Description
UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus three years of appropriate experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
- Demonstrated computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Willingness and ability to learn new computer systems as needed
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program
- Familiarity with Epic electronic medical records
- Familiarity with the California Immunization Registry (CAIR)
- Knowledge of immunizations and childhood vaccines
- Fluency in Spanish or Chinese (speaking, reading, and writing)
- Experience in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, or Family Medicine
- Experience using disease registries to track patient populations
- Experience collecting, entering, and validating data, including identifying errors or missing information
- Prior experience working with the public in a healthcare or clinical setting
License/Certification
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
