Overview
The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist will work onsite at the South San Francisco campus with direction from
*** EHS. Maintain compliance with ***'s EHS Policy through the implementation of safety procedures consistent with the company's requirements and applicable EHS regulations, codes and standards.
- Program support includes some or all of the following: chemical handling, biosafety, hazardous waste, medical waste, ergonomics, emergency response, respiratory protection, industrial hygiene, occupational health, laser safety, facilities-related EHS, and other EHS programs.
- Conduct internal EHS inspections for laboratories including biosafety, fire prevention, hazardous material and waste compliance; record in the EHS database, analyze and address findings.
- Oversee and assist on-site waste technicians in the collection and disposal of hazardous, medical and universal waste; process associated paperwork; oversee life-safety equipment inspections assuring timely completion and safety equipment readiness.
- Request EHS-related supplies and order approved ergonomic equipment per
*** EHS instructions. - Respond to incidents. Conduct incident and accident investigations assuring corrective actions are taken to minimize or prevent similar future incidents.
- Give site EHS orientation training to contractors.
- Coordinate trainings for
*** personnel (i.e. CPR, First Aid, AED). - Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments that apply to tasks, departments, and the overall site. Prepare job hazard analyses.
- Assist in conducting emergency fire drills.
- Assist with laboratory decommissioning, ensuring proper decontamination scheduled, completed per agency’s and
*** requirements and associated paperwork is assembled. - Assist with laboratory moves, commissioning of labs, proper signage, setting up eye wash/shower, fire extinguisher, AED inspections, safety supplies, and completing final inspections to deploy lab spaces.
- Complete and document all regulatory compliance activities per the EHS Calendar according to regulatory deadlines.
- Assist in submitting required EHS reports and recordkeeping information.
- Perform other duties, as assigned, in support of the EHS department goals.
Four year college degree in a related field (e.g., environmental, safety, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering) with 0-5 years of EHS industry experience preferably in biopharma or R&D laboratories
Basic understanding of EHS regulations (federal and state), applicable consensus standards (e.g., ANSI; NFPA; NEC).
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface with internal and external stakeholders with professionalism, sensitivity, and diplomacy.
Preferred QualificationsExcellent communication skills are required as the position interacts with all levels of personnel including facilities, laboratories, engineering, and our business partners.
Experience maintaining and managing day-to-day health, safety, emergency response, environmental compliance activities
Ability to work well in a rapidly changing environment
Demonstrated computer proficiency and familiarity with Google docs, slides, sheets, as well as other common computer applications
Experience with entering data into and navigating database
