Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Director of Finance for a large, mission-driven, youth-centered nonprofit organization with complex public and private funding streams. This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, CA with three days onsite required and parking provided.
POSITION OVERVIEWThe Director of Finance is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial health, compliance infrastructure, and long-term fiscal strategy of a multi-site nonprofit organization with significant government funding exposure. This leader will manage a 5-person Finance & Accounting team and partner closely with the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee to ensure strong internal controls, audit readiness, and transparent financial reporting.
The ideal candidate brings deep nonprofit finance expertise, strong GAAP knowledge, and the ability to balance compliance rigor with mission-driven service delivery.

- Provide strategic financial leadership, overseeing budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and long-term fiscal planning
- Lead government contract compliance, grant reporting, and audit processes to ensure regulatory and GAAP adherence
- Supervise and mentor a 5-person Finance & Accounting team, strengthening systems and internal controls
- Partner cross-functionally with Programs, Development, and HR to align financial strategy with organizational goals
- Enhance financial reporting transparency and provide clear, data-driven insights to the Executive Director and Board
- Assess and improve financial systems, processes, and compliance infrastructure to support sustainable growth
- Significant nonprofit finance leadership experience within complex, multi-funding environments
- Demonstrated expertise managing large organizational budgets and overseeing audit processes
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and government contract compliance requirements
- Experience with nonprofit accounting systems (MIP preferred) and advanced Excel proficiency
- Strategic, collaborative leadership style with high integrity and strong communication skills
This full-time, exempt position offers a salary range of $150,000 – $175,000 annually. The organization provides a comprehensive benefits package, hybrid flexibility, employer-provided equipment, and parking.
