Job Description

A State and Local Tax (SALT) Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, recommending alternate courses of action, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations. The role includes marketing, networking, business development, monitoring changes in tax policy, and applying new policies to tax compliance. The manager works with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to clients.

Job Duties
  • Research: Identify complex situations requiring research, provide outlines of issues and appropriate sources, analyze facts, and prepare detailed research reports. Build relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). of Revenue (DOR) personnel.
  • Tax Compliance: Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns, identify significant state tax issues, compose responses to state notices, and provide exam support.
  • Tax Consulting: Draft tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues; apply state tax consulting sub‑specialties and coordinate with other STS professionals; determine tax planning processes; ensure engagement letters are adopted; manage engagements; develop consultative selling strategies; manage client expectations.
  • Tax Controversy: Represent clients before Loved tax authorities on contested issues.
  • Tax Related Software: Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other software to complete assigned tasks.
  • Tax Specialization: Provide technical client service to multi‑state companies; negotiate settlements, voluntary disclosure agreements, and audit representation; draft technical memoranda on state and local tax issues.
  • Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS
    109:
    Prepare tax accrual work papers.
  • ASC
    740‑10:
    Apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109 and FIN
    48, as well as FAS5 for sales tax and unclaimed properties.
  • Strategy Development: Review tax studies to identify alternative courses of action benefit ting clients; develop new ideas to advance client and firm positions; research potential tax strategies; suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise day‑to‑day workload of STS SALT Senior Associates and Associates; ensure training on tax software; evaluate performance; provide feedback and performance evaluations; act as career advisor.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree, required; focus in business preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Four (4 Beau) years of prior experience in state and local/multistate law, consultancy, or equivalent program required.
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on projects or engagements, required.
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred.
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships, preferred.
  • CPA certification or other relevant certification, preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word), required.
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools, preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and research skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi‑task, work independently or in groups.
  • Capability to lead and delegate to tax professionals.
  • Capacity to build strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
  • Executive presence as primary engagement contact.

Individual salaries are determined after consideration of qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

  • National Range: $79,800 - $168,000
