Under the leadership of our Safety, Health & Compliance Director, the Safety Officer plays a key role in building, maintaining, and continuously improving our Occupational Safety & Health Programs. Using a focused safety management system, this role is dedicated to reducing hazards and creating a safe, healthy work environment for all.

As part of the Airport’s Safety, Health & Compliance team, you’ll help protect Commission staff by supporting workers’ compensation, Injury & Illness Prevention programs, and overall workplace safety initiatives.

  • Evaluate and strengthen our occupational safety programs.
  • Investigate safety incidents and hazardous conditions.
  • Develop and update safety procedures and training.
  • Support ongoing health and safety initiatives.

Nature of Work

The normal work period is Monday through Friday; however, you may be required to report to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays to support Airport emergencies.

How to qualify
  • Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, or equivalent degree in a closely related field from an accredited college or university;
    AND
  • Experience: Four (4) years of professional industrial or occupational safety experience, which must include work safety assessments, engineering design review, accident investigation, safety program development and safety management;
    AND
  • Certification: Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the American Board of Certified Safety Professionals;
    AND
  • License: Possession of current valid California driver’s license;
    AND
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, such as respirator and the ability to climb ladders, bend, squat and crawl in tight spaces to safely access work sites.

    Note:

    A medical examination and the probationary period will be used to evaluate this qualification.
Substitutions
  • Combination of a baccalaureate degree in one of the disciplines specified in MQ #1 and six (6) years of experience as described in MQ #2 may substitute for qualifications #1 and #2.
  • Combination of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree in Engineering, Physical or Natural Sciences from an accredited college or university and seven (7) years of experience as described in MQ #2 may substitute for qualifications #1 and #2.
  • Combination of any baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of experience as described in MQ #2 may substitute for qualifications #1 and #2.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Safety by the State of California Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors may be substituted for the certification MQ #3.
  • A graduate degree as described in MQ #1 and six (6) years of experience as described in MQ #2, without a CSP, is qualifying.

One‑year full‑time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40‑hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full‑time employment.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

Please attach a copy of your certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the American Board of Certified Safety Professionals OR a copy of your license as a Professional Engineer in Safety by the State of California Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience leading the full cycle of safety investigations.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated government or transportation related industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
