Role:
Project Engineer - Water/Wastewater for the Water/Wastewater team. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineering disciplines to co-create solutions for infrastructure challenges, lead technical scopes of work, direct quality management processes, and support client relationships and team development.
Sherwood is seeking a Project Engineer to support our growing civil and environmental engineering practice. The candidate should have strong engineering design experience in water, wastewater and water reuse infrastructure, work well in a multidisciplinary team, and be capable of working independently to develop clear, evidence-based solutions.
Responsibilities- Develop high quality, sustainable engineering solutions for clients including process evaluation, facilities planning, engineering design, permitting & compliance, construction administration and operations planning
- Prepare and review calculations, design criteria and technical memorandums
- Coordinate with teams and engage subconsultants to develop integrated design solutions
- Implement quality assurance and quality control through all project phases
- Plan, assign, and direct work of design engineers to meet project deliverables
- Mentor staff and contribute to performance appraisals; support staff development
- Create and implement innovative design techniques to improve productivity
- Ensure designs comply with current state and local regulations
- Serve as interface between client project teams and the consulting team, conveying technical information timely and professionally
- Work independently under general supervision and exercise sound judgment on design decisions
- Typically 6+ years of industry experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering - Civil and/or Environmental
- Strong water/wastewater technical background with knowledge of physical and chemical treatment processes including water reuse
- Experience across all project phases (conceptual design, detailed design, construction administration)
- Experience preparing technical reports, documentation, and presentations for stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and clients
- Experience advancing plan set packages through project phases and providing redlines for drafters
- Proficient in producing water/wastewater treatment plant designs in AutoCAD
- Experience with process modeling/simulation software (e.g., Bio Win, GPS-X)
- Familiarity with SCADA systems and automated controls for water/wastewater treatment
- Experience performing process and hydraulic calculations, estimating costs, generating P&IDs, process layouts, hydraulics and piping diagrams
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings
- Experience with operation of treatment plants and/or pilot studies, monitoring, sampling, analysis and reporting
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work in a team environment on multiple projects and manage priorities
- Experience in a consulting environment
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate design solutions
- Experience with advanced water treatment technologies (e.g., membrane filtration, UV disinfection)
- Knowledge of regulations and permitting for water, wastewater, and water reuse in California and the U.S.
- Experience with hydraulic modeling of gravity and pressure pipe networks
- Experience with pump station design
- Experience with cost estimation of water and wastewater infrastructure
- Familiarity with Civil 3D, PCSWMM, Sewer
CAD and similar tools - Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Certifications or sustainability-oriented accreditations (LEED, Envision, Living Building Challenge, Eco Districts) preferred
- Develop and lead sustainable engineering solutions including process evaluation, facilities planning, design, permitting, compliance, construction administration and operations planning
- Prepare/review calculations and technical memoranda
- Collaborate across teams and engage subconsultants to develop integrated designs
- Maintain QA/QC throughout project life cycle
- Plan and direct work of design engineers to meet deliverables
- Contribute to staff development through training and mentoring
- Innovate design techniques to enhance productivity
- Ensure compliance with applicable state and local regulations
- Act as interface with client project teams, communicating technical information timely and professionally
- Work independently under general supervision and exercise professional judgment
