The Bay Area Air District is accepting applications for the position of Senior Advanced Projects Advisor in the Assessment, Inventory & Modeling (AIM) Division
. This is an open recruitment for one (1) full‑time, represented position.

The Senior Advanced Projects Advisor will provide strategic leadership on complex technical and policy initiatives within our AIM Division. You’ll lead and advise on advanced studies, represent the Air District with partner agencies and the public, and help guide policies that address air quality, public health, and environmental equity—especially in communities most impacted by air pollution.

The role has a special focus on leading exposure assessments at community, city, or regional scales and offers significant independence, visibility, and the opportunity to influence a variety of air quality planning efforts.

Definition

Under direction, provides lead direction and performs the more complex specialized technical and administrative projects and studies; serves as the Air District's liaison with other agencies; performs related work as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the management level in this specialized class. Incumbents provide lead direction and perform the more difficult and complex technical and administrative work in a variety of areas for the Air District. Incumbents perform project‑oriented assignments requiring considerable professional knowledge and significant independent action and judgement. Incumbents may represent the Air District in strategic situations and speak with the authority of the Air District.

Supervision of others may be assigned to this classification for special projects for a limited duration.

About the AIM Division

The Assessment, Inventory & Modeling (AIM) Division prepares comprehensive emissions inventories for the Bay Area and conducts air quality modeling at both regional and community scales. AIM prepares technical assessments that evaluate equity in air pollution exposures and health impacts in support of Air District programs. AIM coordinates and implements programs to improve and report estimates of emissions of criteria pollutants, toxic air contaminants, and climate forcing pollutants.

AIM assesses emissions, modeled concentrations, and exposures of toxic air contaminants, particulate matter, ozone, and their precursors to support targeted strategies that reduce impacts of air pollution both regionally and within communities, especially those requiring action plans in accordance with Assembly Bill 617 (AB617). AIM reviews and provides guidance on environmental health risk assessments within environmental review documents prepared pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

Examples of Duties
  • Provides lead direction, training and work review to professional, technical and support staff, particularly in air pollution exposure assessment and community‑scale air quality modeling analysis.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the division.
  • Develops and presents technical and policy issues and recommendations to the District Board and executive management.
  • Represents the District with industry, the public, and other agencies on air quality engineering and related matters.
  • Conducts complex and specialized studies involving technical, administrative and policy matters, often confidential; prepares and presents reports of findings; develops policies and recommendations.
  • Assists in the preparation of the Division's budget.
  • Selects personnel and provides for their training and professional development.
  • Tracks, reviews and analyzes current and proposed policies, regulations and legislation; notifies the District of significant activities and implications.
