Joining Arup
Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Arup is seeking a Senior Risk and Resilience Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team of engineers and risk analysts in our San Francisco office. As part of Arup’s core Risk and Resilience team
, you will help shape how we quantify, design for, and communicate multi-hazard risk and resilience in the built environment. You will apply advanced modeling and engineering methods to help clients make informed, risk‑based decisions about building and infrastructure performance, design standards, and investment priorities. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection where seismic and climate risk analysis informs civil and structural engineering, contributing to projects that improve community safety, functional recovery, and physical resilience to earthquakes, extreme wind, flooding, wildfire, landslides and other hazards.
You will collaborate with leading experts across Arup’s global network and develop innovative approaches to integrate resilience thinking into real‑world projects. You will have opportunities to deepen your technical expertise and grow as a thought leader in resilience and risk.
- Risk and Resilience Analysis:
Conduct quantitative risk modeling for buildings and infrastructure systems exposed to seismic, wind, flood and other natural hazards; develop fragility and consequence functions based on research and engineering principles. - Performance‑Based Design:
Contribute to or lead performance‑based design analyses for buildings and infrastructure, integrating resilience and recovery metrics beyond traditional life‑safety objectives. - Multi‑Hazard Integration:
Support the integration of probabilistic hazard data, climate projections, and performance modeling into design and planning projects. - Project and Task Management:
Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, manage scope, budget and deliverables, and ensure technical excellence throughout. - Research and Innovation:
Contribute to internal research initiatives, development of digital tools, and publication of thought leadership in the risk and resilience space. - Client Engagement and Business Development:
Build relationships with clients in the public and private sectors, assist with proposal development, and identify new opportunities to advance Arup’s resilience practice.
- Applied innovation:
Bridge the gap between research and practice by bringing cutting‑edge methods in risk and resilience into real‑world design and planning projects. - Cross-disciplinary collaboration:
Work alongside climate experts, data analysts, planners, and civil, structural, mechanical, and other engineers to develop integrated, forward‑looking resilience solutions. - Impactful projects:
Contribute to landmark resilience programs—ranging from performance‑based seismic risk studies for critical infrastructure to climate‑informed adaptation strategies for major transportation and energy systems. - Global network:
Access Arup’s global expertise in risk and resilience, including partnerships with leading research institutions and global best practices. - Innovation culture:
Contribute to the development of next‑generation tools and methods that advance resilience design and risk quantification.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required;
Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) /PhD preferred. - At least 8 years of experience with 4 years focused on natural hazard risk analysis, applied resilience engineering or related fields.
- Experience with seismic risk analysis preferred.
- Non‑linear and/or finite element modeling experience preferred.
- Code knowledge.
