Job Overview

Geotechnical Field Operations Manager at Langan Engineering & Environmental Services in San Francisco or San Jose, CA. Lead assignment and oversight of field staff, management of field equipment, training delivery, construction observation, and safety program supervision for Northern California offices.

Responsibilities
  • Assign field staff to oversee investigations and construction observation activities, ensuring coverage for all Northern California field projects.
  • Coordinate staffing utilization with other offices, source field personnel for Northern California projects, and identify opportunities for staff to work on other office sites.
  • Provide site‑specific office and in‑field training to staff and technicians; maintain training records.
  • Perform part‑time on‑site geotechnical observations and tests during construction and report findings through detailed written and verbal logs.
  • Manage the nuclear gauge radiation safety program as Alternate Radiation Safety Officer, ensuring regulatory compliance, record‑keeping, and personnel training.
  • Optimize Northern California field equipment inventory and coordinate implementation of equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain on‑site and off‑site geotechnical soil sample facilities and equipment rooms, including proper disposal of samples.
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring of field technicians and entry‑level staff engineers.
  • Manage construction projects: brief staff, review field dailies, respond to RFIs, and write construction summaries and special inspection letters.
  • Perform project management tasks: develop budgets and schedules, prepare progress reports, review billings, draft change orders and invoices, and assist with payment collections.
  • Actively participate in Langan Health and Safety training and serve as the Bay Area Health & Safety liaison.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and communicate clearly and effectively with contractors, subcontractors, staff, project managers, supervisors, and others.
  • Interact with contractor and subcontractor representatives, providing strong customer service and responsiveness to client needs.
  • Assist other work groups within the same or different discipline or office locations as needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate required; associate’s degree or college courses in science, engineering, or related fields strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a geotechnical field engineer or technician, with geotechnical field equipment and instruments.
  • Portable nuclear gauge certification and HAZWOPER certification required.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical regulatory protocols.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, multitasking, and judgment capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Bluebeam Revu.
  • Ability to visit project sites in California to observe and test geotechnical aspects of construction as needed, and to conduct job‑site training of staff.
  • Willingness to work during evenings and weekends when required.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing.
