Position: Building Enclosure Consultant (Roofing/Waterproofing) | 8+ Years

Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking a curious, committed, and enthusiastic Building Enclosure Consultant with 8+ years of experience and a focus in roofing and waterproofing to join our dynamic and diverse team of architects and engineers in the San Francisco Bay Area
.

As a Building Enclosure Consultant at WJE, you will contribute to a more sustainable built world as you collaborate closely with clients, contractors, and other consultants on projects centered around the forensic investigation, detailing, and restoration of various roofing, waterproofing, and building envelope systems. Anticipated projects will have a roughly 80-20 split between existing (heavy on forensics and litigation) and new construction.

Responsibilities
  • Technical project execution
    , including performing and leading others in hands‑on field work, diagnostic testing, and construction administration; combining a principles‑first approach with a deep understanding of governing codes, design guidelines, and industry practices to develop practical and innovative solutions for a variety of building envelope systems, materials, and applications; collaborating with interdisciplinary project teams across WJE as the roofing and waterproofing subject‑matter expert (SME);

    and preparing technically excellent client deliverables
  • Day‑to‑day success of multiple concurrent projects (whether or not you are the project manager), including acting as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and project teams; jumping in to help where needed; training and mentoring teammates; providing high‑quality reviews of work by others; and stamping project documents as appropriate
  • Project management
    , including client development, project scoping, assembling and managing appropriate project teams, maintaining project schedules and budgets, negotiating changes to scope, and managing client expectations and deliverables
  • Contributions to local and company‑wide objectives
    , participation in the attraction, development, and engagement of up‑and‑coming WJE professionals; collaborating with colleagues for in‑house knowledge‑sharing and training initiatives; and engaging in meaningful involvement in industry‑related professional organizations, conferences, and technical committees
Qualifications / Competencies
  • Registered Architect (RA) or Professional Engineer (PE); IIBEC Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) or other relevant professional certifications (e.g., RRO, RWC, REWC) will be considered in lieu of a license with significant relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, Civil Engineering or related field; significant relevant experience and certifications will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum eight years of relevant industry experience
    , with an established focus in roofing and waterproofing consulting (or well‑rounded building envelope experience with a desire to build focused expertise in roofing and waterproofing); experience with balconies, plazas, and other horizontal applications preferred; project management experience preferred
  • Demonstrated (or developing) expertise in the investigation, litigation, troubleshooting, design, and detailing (especially at transitions) of various contemporary and historic building enclosure systems (e.g., roofing, waterproofing, facades) and a strong understanding of the principles of heat, air, and moisture control within building envelope materials, assemblies, and their interfaces
  • Strong technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
