Under general administrative direction, manages, and directs the activities of professional and technical engineering, architecture and/or landscape architecture personnel performing highly technical and administrative functions in connection with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of projects and systems.
The essential functions of the class may vary depending upon assignment and may include:
- Directing, supervising, and coordinating the design of complex engineering, architecture, or landscape architecture projects.
- Conducting interviews, selecting, training, monitoring, and evaluating departmental staff and consultants.
- Planning, organizing, and directing the administration and management of contracts.
- Overseeing and reviewing the preparation of complex construction contracts and documents.
- Establishing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and administrative directives.
- Managing projects and coordinating activities between units and other groups.
- Consulting with technical staff, conducting meetings, and representing the City.
- Writing, reviewing, and approving documents.
- Supervising the review of shop drawings by contractors and field inspection staff.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
1. Seven (7) years verifiable professional engineering work experience (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, sanitary/chemical/environmental, transportation/traffic, or structural), of which four (4) years must be as a licensed professional engineer in the specialty you are applying for
. Two (2) of the seven (7) years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5241 Engineer in the specialty you are applying for
.
AND
2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California with a License Type as Structural Engineering

Notes:
Substitutions for Engineering Specialties:
- A Master’s Degree in Engineering may substitute for 1 year of work experience.
- A PhD in Engineering may substitute for 2 years of work experience.
