Hardware Engineer – Autonomous Construction VehiclesBase Salary Range: $200,000-$300,000
Location: San Francisco, CA
OverviewWe’re partnering with a fast‑growing robotics startup that is redefining how heavy construction equipment is built and deployed. This team is retrofitting real‑world machinery with plug‑and‑play autonomy systems and already has live deployments on active construction sites.
This is a hands‑on hardware role for engineers who love building physical systems from scratch and want to see their work operating in the real world—not stuck in a lab or prototype phase.
Why this role stands out- Work on autonomous construction vehicles deployed on live job sites
- Join a team that went from zero to production deployments in months
- Mission‑driven focus on fixing inefficiencies in construction and housing
- Backed by top‑tier investors and led by second‑time founders with a strong execution track record
- Fast‑paced, pragmatic environment with real ownership and impact
- Design and develop teleoperation and autonomy hardware systems
, including power, compute, and control modules for heavy equipment retrofits - Integrate, mount, and calibrate sensors including cameras, LiDAR, radar, GNSS, and IMUs
- Design and build wiring harnesses
, connectors, and mounting solutions for rugged field deployment - Implement and validate vehicle and system communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, J1939, Ethernet, and Serial
- Support system bring‑up, debugging, and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) testing in collaboration with software and robotics teams
- Troubleshoot issues in both lab and field environments and iterate quickly
- 2–10 years of experience in hardware engineering, robotics, automotive, or embedded systems
- Strong hands‑on experience with electrical systems, sensors, and embedded hardware
- Comfort working on real machines in non‑ideal, real‑world conditions
- Experience with vehicle or industrial communication protocols (CAN/J1939 strongly preferred)
- Builder mindset — you enjoy shipping, iterating, and seeing systems operate in production
- Passion for robotics, autonomy, and building things that matter
