About San Francisco University High School

UHS is a coeducational independent day school in San Francisco, California with 518 students in grades 9–12. UHS is located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.

The Opportunity

University High School is seeking a committed and knowledgeable Varsity Assistant Coach for Badminton. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical knowledge of the sport, the ability to support student-athletes of varying skill levels, and a genuine investment in team culture and development. This is a seasonal, part-time position with responsibilities concentrated during the spring season, with possible involvement in preseason training or offseason skill development.

The Varsity Assistant Coach will work closely with the Program Director and Varsity Head Coach to help maintain an inclusive, competitive, and mission-aligned environment for the badminton program. Candidates should demonstrate care for student-athlete growth, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to reinforce program standards with consistency and enthusiasm.

Requirements Primary Responsibilities
  • Support the Program Director and Varsity Head Coach in all aspects of the Varsity Badminton program.
  • Assist in planning and leading practice sessions focused on technical skill development, footwork, conditioning, and match strategy.
  • Provide individualized instruction and feedback to student-athletes across a wide range of experience levels.
  • Assist with match-day operations, including warmups, lineup preparation, in-match coaching, and post-match reflection.
  • Promote a positive team culture grounded in effort, sportsmanship, accountability, and mutual respect.
  • Support the academic, physical, and emotional well-being of all student-athletes.
  • Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, athletic training staff, athletic administration, and families as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with University High School, Bay Counties League (BCL), Bay Area Conference (BAC), North Coast Section (NCS), and CIF policies and regulations.
  • Assist with equipment setup, breakdown, and basic inventory needs, including racquets, shuttlecocks, and uniforms.
  • Represent the program at required athletic department functions, including seasonal meetings, parent orientations, and community events.
Qualifications
  • Coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or competitive club level preferred.
  • Strong understanding of badminton fundamentals, scoring, match strategy, and player development.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a coaching staff and athletic department.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to mentor and motivate high school student-athletes.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required (or willingness to obtain).
  • Willingness to complete all CIF/NCS-required coaching certifications.
  • Competitive playing experience at the collegiate or advanced club level preferred.
Compensation

This is a seasonal, part-time position.

Compensation Range: $5,000 – $7,000

Compensation reflects responsibilities during the spring competitive season and any additional approved preseason or offseason involvement.
