Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

University of California, San Francisco

The UCSF Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is seeking faculty to join our vibrant, collaborative, and supportive discovery research community at the Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco.

We seek creative, innovative scientists who define and address fundamental questions in any area of modern biology, including but not limited to basic and biomedical sciences, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, structural biology, cell biology, developmental biology, systems biology, and computational biology.

We provide faculty with resources to effectively launch their program, including a strong mentoring culture, a highly competitive start‑up package, administrative support, and facilities for advanced light and cryo‑electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, high‑throughput small‑molecule screening, cytometry, and state‑of‑the‑art animal care.

The successful candidate will establish a dynamic and interactive research program and join one or more of our top‑ranked interdisciplinary graduate programs (see (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).

UCSF offers competitive salaries, research set‑up funds, and recruitment allowances, and has numerous opportunities for faculty development and further training in mentorship.

  • Biosketch/Curriculum Vitae - note that while we will accept any format, we prefer a modified NIH‑style biosketch with the following sections:
    • A. Personal Statement. This section should describe your overarching research vision and why you are well‑suited for our department. Relevant factors may include: aspects of your training; your previous experimental or theoretical work; the collaborators you envision working with at UCSF; how you would benefit from and contribute to the scientific environment at UCSF; the key goals of your future research program.

      This section should be no longer than 300 words. Note that unlike a standard NIH biosketch there is no need to include ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years that you want to draw attention to (as this overlaps with section

      B). There is also no need to cite up to four publications or research products that highlight your experience and qualifications (as this overlaps with section

      C).
    • B. Position, Scientific Appointments and Honors. List in reverse chronological order all current positions and scientific appointments. This section should also include all awards, scholarships, trainee ships, fellowships, and development awards.
    • C. Contributions to Science. Briefly describe up to five of your most significant contributions to science. The description of each contribution should be no longer than 300 words. For each contribution, include the following:
      * The historical background that frames the scientific problem;
