Job Title: On Call Teacher Aide/Substitute Teacher
Job Classification: On Call/Part Time, Non‑exempt
Reports to: Teacher/Site Manager
Organizational Overview: STEP (Substitute Teacher Empowerment and Placement), a subsidiary of Kai Ming Head Start, is a non‑profit program originally funded by the San Francisco OECE. It provides affordable substitute teacher staffing for childcare centers while promoting fair wages, professional development for teachers and quality early‑childhood education. No ECE units are required to start.

Job DescriptionThis position functions as a floater in the center, supporting classrooms when needed. The primary role is to support classroom activities, supervision, and needs; the secondary role is to ensure quality food service and sanitation in the center.
Essential Duties I. Primary Responsibilities- Prepare classroom activities and the classroom environment
- Assist with the implementation of curriculum as needed
- Supervise children at all times
- Help ensure indoor/outdoor safety
- Oversee the daily nap routine
- Communicate with parents at pick‑up time when needed
- Interact with children appropriately
- Report inappropriate behavior of staff, parents, and on‑site consultants to the appropriate supervisor
- Assist center administration staff as assigned by the site manager (e.g., checking and opening doors, answering phones, etc.)
- Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or site manager
- Receive food from the driver and check delivery against the driver sheet
- Check and record the temperature of food served, reheating as needed
- Check and record refrigerator/freezer temperatures
- Prepare meals for each class
- Clean up and wash dishes
- Maintain a sanitation log
- Experience working with children 0 to 5 years old preferred
- No units in Child Development/Early Childhood Education are required to start
- Hold a food handler permit currently or plan to apply for it upon hire
- Ability to take initiative, accept direction, and seek guidance appropriately
- Ability to maintain the highest levels of health, safety, and supervision of children
- Light to moderate lifting (up to approximately 50 lb) is required, such as lifting a child, chair, table, etc.
- Physical exam and TB clearance every 2 years
- Criminal background clearance
- Child Abuse Index clearance
- Adherence to the confidentiality agreement
- Adherence to the Child Abuse Reporting Mandate
- Regularly required to change position; to sit, stand, walk, climb or balance; to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; to bend, twist, and reach with hands and arms; and to pick up children
- Adherence to the code of conduct and all other internal policies and procedures
- Accountable for the health, safety, and supervision of all children and families
- COVID‑19 vaccination requirement: proof of vaccination record and bivalent booster
$18.75–$23.00 per hour. Salary will be commensurate with education and permit level. Benefits include tuition and textbook reimbursement, paid training, career counseling, PTO (paid time off), and MRA (medical reimbursement account).
