Description : The Maureen and Craig Family Center sits in between the 10th & Mission Family Housing and Edith Witt Senior Community buildings and has access to the common courtyard. The purpose of the center is to provide learning and socializing opportunities and resources with the youth residing at 10th and Mission. The opportunities and resources serve as means to reduce isolation, strengthen families, support education and employment pathways while improving the quality of life for all residents.

  • The After-school Teaching Assistant works with the Activities Coordinator and Program Leadership to plan, schedule, and host or conduct events for various groups of residents. The After school Teaching Assistant will also seek regular feedback from residents to inform the types or classes or resources needed or wanted.
  • The After School Teacher Assistant position assists in planning daily programmatic academic enrichment activities and provides academic support to all children participating in the Youth Center, ages ranging from 5 to 17 daily.
  • Youth Center is open 2 to 6pm daily.
  • Position schedule:
    Weekdays: 11:30 — 6pm/ 6hours-work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implements and plans as directed, age-appropriate academic enrichment periods.

  • Setting up of supplies, educational materials and program space for activity every day.

  • Supervises groups of youth during all enrichment activities, such as outdoor recreation, art projects, computer lab, etc., promoting safe behavior, and special events.

  • Sanitize, disinfect & organize all common use areas.

  • Mediates conflicts between children, focusing on “accountable- talk.”

  • Supervises youth during free play to ensure a healthy, safe and nurturing environment.

  • Distributes and stores program equipment, laptops, iPad, food and activity supplies.

  • Communicates productively with parents regarding children’s issues.

  • Participates in staff meetings, as directed.

  • Attends trainings, as directed.

  • Prepares, plans and implements in- door activities as alternatives for rainy days.

  • Responds to emergencies according to directives present on Program Emergency Plan.

  • Prepares and submits Incident Reports on as needed basis.

  • Other tasks as assigned by the Program Manager and the Activities Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience working with children and parents of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.

  • Experience with and knowledge of issues facing homeless families.

  • Understands rationale and procedure for child abuse reporting as mandated by state law and the responsibility for action as a mandated reporter.

  • CPR/First Aid Certificate

  • Clear Physical Examination

  • Bilingual in Cantonese preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge and clear understanding of Child Development and Education field, experience with class management, planning and curriculum implementation.

  • Understanding of the needs of the working-poor and marginalized communities of color.

  • Knowledgeable of social issues, such as poverty, violence, racism, that impact children and families.

  • Understands emotional and social development including the emergence of identity and self-esteem.

  • Ability to control and manage groups of children in structure and un-structured environments.

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a program with limited resources.

  • Ability to display healthy leadership skills.

  • Ability to display organizational skills.

  • Ability to be consistently punctual and responsible.

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage demands.
