The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

Job Description and Duties
  • Perform scheduled maintenance of all fleet vehicles.
  • Diagnose and perform minor repairs and adjustments on vehicles.
  • Assemble, install, repair, and/or remove special automotive equipment.
  • Conduct comprehensive safety inspections of the fleet.
  • Change flat or damaged tires as needed.
  • Schedule and deliver vehicles for necessary maintenance and approved complex repairs to authorized facilities.
  • Ensure all vehicles are returned to service in a timely manner.
  • Maintain records of vehicle repairs/maintenance in vehicle files and CHP fleet database.
  • Examine all repair billings to ensure optimum cost/quality maintenance level is maintained.
  • Requisition/Purchase automotive supplies to ensure adequate on‑hand inventory commensurate with current and future fleet needs.
  • Provide for timely sale of used materials (tires, rotors, batteries, etc.).
  • Maintain supply of mounted tires commensurate with prevailing weather conditions.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date copies of CHP fleet related Information Bulletins.
  • Maintain strict inventory control of all vehicles, parts, tools, and shop equipment.
  • Deliver and pick‑up vehicles and automotive parts/supplies at CHP Fleet Operations Section in Sacramento.
  • Maintain fuel island, including adequate supply of fuel, fuel logs, and miscellaneous supplies.
  • Check below‑ground fuel tank level each business day and reconcile against meter readings.
  • Coordinate fuel shipments.
  • Coordinate pick‑up of hazardous waste.
Working Conditions

Crawling underneath a vehicle, lifting and carrying tires up to 60 pounds, and working in varying and sometimes extreme temperatures are required.

Minimum qualifications are stated in the Classification Specification for the Automotive Technician II classification.

Special Requirements
  • A valid California Drivers License (CDL) is required. CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements or restrictions must be provided on the application.
  • A drug screening must be passed prior to hiring.
  • A background investigation must be cleared prior to hiring.
  • Medical clearance is required prior to hiring.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Automotive Technician II classification to be eligible to take the examination listed on Cal Careers. Eligibility to obtain certification requires submission of an application to the Job Control and completion of the examination.
