Appointment TypeFOR CURRENT CITY EMPLOYEES ONLY. This is an Exempt to Permanent position in accordance with Class-Based Test (CBT) Civil Service Rules. This recruitment is restricted to current category 16, 17 and 18 exempt employees of the City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco Unified School District, or San Francisco City College, working within the posted classification of 8118 Legislative Clerk.
Only currently active, exempt employees of the City and County of San Francisco in class 8118 Legislative Clerk will be placed on the eligible list for consideration of future permanent positions.

The 8118 Legislative Clerk is responsible for performing specialized clerical work that involves extensive knowledge of departmental functions and the legislative process.
Under general supervision, duties include evaluating and preparing proposed legislation for processing by the Office of the Clerk of the Board and ultimately for consideration and action by the Board of Supervisors. This position is responsible for ensuring proposed legislation and appeals are in compliance with all relevant laws, before the item is eligible to move forward in the legislative process.
The Legislative Clerk will make regular contact with City departments and outside individuals to obtain and furnish information on specialized legislative matters, Board Agenda preparation, and collecting and reviewing technical legislative documents for completeness and accuracy.
The 8118 Legislative Clerk is specific to the Office of the Clerk of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
Essential Duties- Is responsible to receive and screen proposed legislation submitted to the Clerk's office for completeness, form, content and attachments; registers and assigns file numbers to such documents; types and sets up appropriate files; and routes proposed legislation to appropriate committee.
- In conjunction with the Assistant Clerks, is responsible for ensuring that submitted legislation is in compliance with Federal, State, and Local laws, Board Rules and Office Policies and Procedures before all legislative files are ready for appropriate legislative action (Board Rule 2.8).
- Accurately creates summaries of proposed legislation for appropriate calendars, and ensures the relevant information is contained therein.
- Contacts and follows up with departments and other sources to obtain required attachments or documents missing from proposals, and assures such attachments and documents are submitted before an item is submitted for a draft agenda.
- Prepares, publishes and posts noticing requirements for specialized legislative matters.
- Communicates with various departments and others regarding obtaining amendments or other changes in legislation within the prescribed deadlines pursuant to the guidelines and Code provisions.
- Provides and receives information to and from departments and the general public regarding the status of legislative matters.
- Independently composes and types correspondence relative to office operations, requiring knowledge of operations and regulations, for department and Supervisors offices prior to providing it to the Clerk of the Board for signature and/or approval.
- Serves as responsible party in department for receiving and administrating appeals to the Board of Supervisors and providing departmental policy guidance to the public throughout the appeal process.
- Provides assistance to the Assistant Clerks and their committees with administrative tasks and duties, such as writing legislative referrals to affected departments, creating and processing legal notices, and compilation of other reports or records to effectuate the legislative process.
- Will use legislative management system software extensively and serve as the system’s subject matter expert for the role of Legislative Clerk
- Performs other duties as required.
- Current Exempt City Employee in class 8118 Legislative Clerk who have worked at least 2,080 hours in categories 16, 17, or 18; AND
- Three years of progressively responsible and diversified clerical and typing experience, preferably performing clerical work for a legislative or policy making body, or a closely related legal field;AND
- Ability to type 50 wpm.
