Birch Aquarium at Scripps is a non‑profit exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The aquarium showcases over 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates. The interactive museum features research discoveries by Scripps scientists and engages visitors of all ages.

POSITION DESCRIPTIONPerforms skilled journey‑level carpentry work in support of the Aquarium‑Museum facility, providing in‑house carpentry expertise for fabrication, maintenance, repair, renovation, and upgrade activities across the entire facility. The position supports exhibit spaces, public and guest‑facing areas, back‑of‑house operations, offices, classrooms, and other support spaces to ensure safe, functional, and well‑maintained environments.
Responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of custom cabinetry, counters, shelving, workstations, furniture, and facility components. Performs finish and rough carpentry work including framing, drywall, doors, windows, flooring, and related building elements, working from blueprints, drawings, shop sketches, and written and verbal instructions.
Serves as a key in‑house carpentry resource for the Facilities unit and Exhibits team, supporting planned and responsive maintenance, refurbishments, and renovations. Provides technical guidance and oversight to Facilities staff, Exhibits staff, students, volunteers, and semi‑skilled labor performing carpentry‑related work, enabling projects to be completed efficiently while maintaining quality, safety, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Collaborates with internal departments and coordinates as needed with UC San Diego Facilities Management and external vendors, helping reduce reliance on outside resources for routine and semi‑complex carpentry work. Contributes to inspection of facility conditions, identification of repair needs, and implementation of improvements that support operations, visitor safety, and the overall guest experience. Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with Aquarium‑Museum staff and stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS- Ability to perform a full range of journey‑level carpentry duties related to construction, repair, maintenance, renovation, and fabrication.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in journey‑level carpentry work.
- Skill in the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment used in carpentry work.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and written and verbal instructions.
- Skill in fabricating, assembling, installing, modifying, and repairing cabinetry, furniture, fixtures, and structural components.
- Knowledge of standard methods for rough and finish carpentry, including framing, drywall, cabinetry, doors, windows, and related building components.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes, safety regulations, and standard trade practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a work group under general supervision.
- Ability to plan, organize, and complete assigned carpentry tasks within established time frames.
