UC San Diego's Temporary Employment Services (TES) department is seeking multiple Triton Safety Officials (TSOs) to support the UC San Diego Police Department. TSOs are non-sworn, unarmed safety personnel who work under the direction of sworn officers and play an essential role in maintaining safety across campus and affiliated locations.

Position Overview

TSOs patrol assigned areas on campus and at remote sites to help ensure the safety of residents, visitors, and university property. This role serves as a public-facing safety presence and acts as a liaison between the community and sworn police personnel.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and reporting safety concerns, hazards, and potential criminal activity
  • Ensuring compliance with University policies and site-specific regulations
  • Providing safety escorts, public information, and general crime-prevention support
  • Assisting with lock-outs and other non-emergency service needs
  • Participating in public presentations and community engagement efforts
  • Making private person's arrests when appropriate
  • Performing additional duties as assigned

TSOs also support safety operations at special events and expressive activities, providing guidance to event organizers, educating the campus community on First Amendment rights and protest procedures, and staying current on university communications related to free speech and demonstrations.

Key Position Details
  • Schedule:
On-call with highly variable hours (0-40 hours per week). Shifts may include days, swing, and nights. Overtime may be required. Typical shift length: 8-10 hours.
  • Duration:
Approximately 6-9 months, with the possibility of extension.
  • Compensation: $25.08 - $27.13 per hour.
  • Location:

Primarily UC San Diego's main La Jolla campus; some assignments may occur at remote UC San Diego sites in La Jolla or the greater San Diego area.
Department Overview

The UC San Diego Police Department is committed to building strong community partnerships and using innovative policing approaches tailored to the university environment. The department's mission is to protect life and property while supporting a high quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. With a daily campus population exceeding 75,000 and a physical footprint of nearly 900 facilities across multiple locations-including the Main Campus, Medical Centers, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Elliott Field, and additional sites-UC San Diego operates like a small city.

This complexity requires a highly coordinated safety and security infrastructure, of which TSOs are a vital part.
