The department serves a campus with over 38,000 students, 2,800 faculty, and 35,000 staff, plus 6 undergraduate residential colleges, 5 major medical centers, 7 graduate schools, and the Birch Aquarium.
Position OverviewPrimary responsibilities include patrolling the UCSD campus by motor vehicle and on foot, protecting lives and property, keeping the peace, conducting investigations of reported crimes and accidents, submitting reports, enforcing traffic and parking laws, making arrests, testifying in court, responding to medical emergencies and illness calls, providing directions and assistance to staff, students and visitors, and performing other duties as assigned.
KeyQualifications
- Active POST Certificate of graduation or recertification from a POST‑certified academy, or an active Peace Officer POST certificate upon hire.
- Availability to work rotating shifts, overtime, details, and mutual aid (both in and out of San Diego County).
- Strong public service orientation and ability to serve independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to comply with instruction and to maintain a professional stance in stressful situations.
- Accurate report writing skills and effective courtroom testimony.
- Willingness to work mandatory overtime in diverse weather conditions.
- Skill in the use and care of firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, restraint devices, ECDs and other safety equipment.
- Competence in motor‑vehicle operation under emergency driving conditions.
- Knowledge of state and federal laws, university policies and procedures, and defensive tactics.
- Proficiency in first‑aid and “first responder” skills.
- Ability to follow proper evidence‑collection, preservation and impound procedures.
- Experience in computer systems including Microsoft Word, Outlook and law‑enforcement databases (CAD/RMS preferred).
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Valid California Driver License.
- Minimum age 21 years; height/weight proportion; vision 20/100 correctable to 20/30 with normal color perception.
- Candidates will be fingerprinted and undergo a thorough background investigation.
- Must pass medical, drug, psychiatric/sociological exams and a polygraph exam.
- Must meet CANRA compliance requirements.
- Final candidate must disclose any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years regarding misconduct.
- “Misconduct” includes violations of policies governing employee conduct, harassment or discrimination, as referenced by UC policies (e.g., Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment, Anti‑Discrimination, Abusive Conduct in the Workplace).
