Overview

Salk Edge Summer Program is a two‑week, technique‑intensive initiative designed to equip PhD students with advanced research skills and professional development tools for successful careers in science. The program focuses on training students in cutting‑edge laboratory techniques while also offering soft‑skill workshops on grant writing, networking, and scientific communication. Participants engage directly with Salk faculty and labs, building valuable postdoctoral connections.

Goals
  • Provide participants with high‑quality instruction and innovative research techniques.
  • Help enhance soft skills needed to succeed in postdoctoral positions in top‑tier labs.
  • Gain access to cutting‑edge scientific equipment needed to carry out scientific research.
  • Provide participants with networking opportunities with Salk faculty.
Program Dates

August 17, 2026 to August 28, 2026

Program Tracks
  • Genome Editing in Cancer: Learn how to use CRISPR/Cas9 techniques to create genome‑edited cell lines. Conduct hands‑on wet‑lab experimentation in cancer cells and other biological systems. Goal: train students to create knockout cell lines applicable to their thesis projects, supported by a $1,500 pilot grant.
  • Computational Neuroscience: Learn cutting‑edge computer vision and deep‑learning tools for analyzing large‑scale neural and behavioral data. Train in Python programming for scientific data analysis. Goal: equip students with AI‑based methods applicable to their thesis projects, supported by a $1,500 pilot grant.
  • Bioinformatics of Immune Cells: Learn to analyze transcriptional expression data from RNA‑seq of immune cell populations. Perform flow‑cytometry sorting, RNA‑seq library preparation, and bioinformatic analyses. Goal: train students to run bulk RNA‑sequencing sample preparation and analyses for their thesis projects, supported by a $1,500 pilot grant.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Current PhD student who has chosen a lab for thesis work.
  • Able to commit to the full program dates in person.
  • Travelling from within the United States.
