Summary: Research in the Kersten Lab at Sanford Burnham Prebys is focused on dissecting the interactions between the immune system and cancer (). Our mission is to better understand how the crosstalk between different immune cells affects tumor growth and responsiveness to (immuno) therapy.
The Kersten Lab is recruiting a Research Assistant I/II to study the molecular mechanisms of T cell dysfunction and myeloid cell interactions in the tumor microenvironment. The Research Assistant will be responsible for daily maintenance activities within the laboratory, including equipment maintenance, ordering, and fundamental research activities in the lab such as mouse genotyping and inventory. Direct supervision will be provided by Dr.
Kersten and/or other lab members.
- Perform cell culture and molecular experiments related to immune oncology
- Perform animal-related work including mouse genotyping and colony maintenance
- Test new assays and establish protocols
- Determines methods and procedures on new assignments or day-to-day work
- Keeps written records of experiments and data organization
- Troubleshoots problems and develops solutions to technical problems of moderate to high scope using independent thinking, literature, and colleagues as resources to solve problems
- Provides interpretation and analysis of results
- Maintains various reagent collections, and inventories
- Orders lab supplies as needed
- Follow all appropriate safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment. Ensure that safe work practices according to EH&S guidelines are followed by lab members, including handling of chemicals and biohazardous materials
- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience to obtain skills and abilities
- Prior lab experience is preferred
- Experience in working with mouse models is preferred
- Candidates with one or more years of experience may be considered for Level II
- Work independently as well as in a team environment
- Be responsible and have strong time management skills
- Able to analyze and resolve issues of moderate complexity
- Possess strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills
- Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office

CompensationThe expected hiring range for this position is $47,558 - $59,448/year commensurate with experience.
