Position title:
Postdoctoral Scholar. This position is sponsored by the Food & Fuel for the 21st Century/Division of Biological Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, under the supervision of Prof. Stephen Mayfield and Dr. Ryan Simkovsky. The project focuses on engineering cyanobacteria to convert sunlight and atmospheric carbon into biomass and chemicals that can be used to generate polyurethane precursors and fuels.
The trainee will develop synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and high-throughput screening tools to alter a novel cyanobacterial strain for increased production, evaluate strains in the laboratory, and potentially scale productive strains in 200-L raceway ponds at the greenhouse facility for collaboration with Chemistry and industry partners.
A fully-funded post-doctoral position is available to contribute to sustainable materials development and biotechnological production of chemicals for polyurethane materials. The successful candidate will work on genetic engineering and screening of cyanobacteria, with collaboration across UCSD departments and industry partners. The appointment duration varies depending on funding and project needs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications on the UC pay scales. The total duration of postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including previous postdoctoral work at other institutions.
