Be part of habitat restoration efforts while learning about local San Diego ecology at the Gonzales Canyon Habitat Restoration project!
Opportunity Requirements & Important NotesKey Responsibilities:
- Plant native species
- Remove invasive plants
- Water and mulch newly planted vegetation
- Dig planting holes using shovels
- Carry buckets of water and potted plants to planting areas
- Assist with general site upkeep to support long-term restoration efforts
Skills &
Qualifications:
- Interest in environmental conservation and habitat restoration
- Comfortable working outdoors in sunny conditions with little or no shade
- Ability to follow instructions and safety guidelines
- Comfortable walking on dirt trails and uneven surfaces
- Ability to bend, kneel and perform ground-level tasks
- Comfortable using basic hand tools such as shovels
Training Provided: On-site training provided at the beginning of the shift.
Attire: Attire appropriate for working outdoors in the sun — clothing that can get dirty, long pants, closed toe shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Gloves will be provided. This opportunity takes place outdoors with little or no shade so volunteers should wear sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat.
Bring: Hat, sunscreen, water to drink, sunglasses, and snacks.
Physical Requirements: Be comfortable walking on a dirt trail and uneven surfaces. There will be some bending and kneeling. Preferred abilities include being able to carry a bucket of water or a potted plant, and being able to use a shovel for digging. This opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible.
Weather: Event will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain; advance notice can be 1 to 2 days. Volunteers will receive email notifications and phone calls if numbers are provided.
Note: There will not be a restroom available at this project space. Street parking in front of the trailhead sign is free.
The mission of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy is to preserve, protect, and share the natural and cultural resources of the San Dieguito River Valley through collaborative efforts to acquire lands, complete trails, restore habitats, establish educational programs, create interpretive centers, encourage recreation, and mobilize public support.
