Overview

Our client, the California Wildlife Foundation (CWF) is looking to fill a Vegetation Maintenance Technician role. This position is located at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, CA. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday; 36-40 hours per week; anticipated through September 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts coastal sage scrub restoration and vegetation maintenance, including:
  • Removing non-native plants via mechanical and chemical methods
  • Trimming overgrown native vegetation
  • Restoring disturbed areas with native plants
  • Cabrillo National Monument Weed Warriors Volunteer group (30+ volunteers each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday)
  • One-time volunteer groups from companies and organizations
  • Youth and adult interns (middle school through adults)
  • Designs and implements integrated pest management strategies
  • Maintaining QAC/QAL certification
  • Conducting and advising park staff on pesticide/herbicide use
Qualifications
  • Southern California Vegetation:
    Knowledge of native and non-native plants of Southern California, including trimming, planting, and invasive species management. Additionally, knowledge of trail corridor management and erosion control is desired.
  • Teaching Others:
    Experience leading and mentoring volunteers, student groups and interns in field-based restoration.
  • Outdoor Work:
    Required for hiking uneven terrain, carrying tools, and performing labor-intensive restoration work. This position consists of outdoor work in natural settings with limited supervision.
  • Accountability:
    Ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality completion of vegetation management tasks.
  • Invasive Plant Management:
    Removal and management of non-native plants through mechanical and chemical means. Up-to-date knowledge of county, state and federal integrated pest management practices and herbicide/pesticide safety practices.
  • Information Management:
    Collecting and organizing field data related to vegetation and restoration efforts using tools like Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS.
