Overview

Unit

Jacobs Medical Center 5FG is a 24-bed Medical Oncology/Palliative Care Progressive Care Unit. The unit collaborates across disciplines to provide prescribed oncology care including chemotherapy and biotherapy. The team supports patients needing aggressive symptom management and works with a multidisciplinary palliative care team to address physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual well‑being.

Responsibilities (summary)

The nurse is expected to practice autonomous nursing care consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance, using independent judgment within interdisciplinary care. The role includes assessment, planning, and delivery of nursing actions appropriate to patient populations based on competence and knowledge, with emphasis on comprehensive cancer care and symptom management.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • RN License issued by the State of California.
  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to obtain UCSD ART within six months of hire date.
  • Chemotherapy Certification at time of hire or commitment to initiate certification within 6 months and achieve certification within one year of hire date.
  • Minimum two years of recent inpatient oncology experience (within the last 2 years). If insufficient applicant pool, consideration may be given to RNs with one year of oncology, palliative care, or IMU/PCU experience.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage information and moderately complex problems.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment with excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrate empathy and kindness to staff and patients.
  • Ability to identify and implement nursing interventions and evaluate results with clinical judgment.
  • Effective communication and influence with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and external constituents, verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BSN.
  • Palliative care RN experience.
  • Prior chemotherapy experience.
  • Certification in PCCN, OCN or Palliative Care.
Special Conditions
  • Must be able to work varied hours, days, shifts, on-call, and multiple locations based on the Medical Center’s needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Selected candidate may be hired at CNIII level pending review by the Nurse Executive Council.
Pay Transparency

Annual Full Pay Range: $138,330 - $193,892 (will be prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%).

Hourly Equivalent: $66.25 - $92.86.

Compensation factors include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business needs. The posted annual range may be broader due to internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (where applicable).
