This position is full-time, 12 hr shifts- weekends included. The chosen candidate will be working at one of our San Diego Correctional Facilities.
3x12-hour shifts, including two full weekends a month (with a 6a-730a flexible start time)
Position SummaryThe Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive primary and urgent care services to individuals in custody at the San Diego facility. The NP is responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, prescribing, and ongoing management of patient care in alignment with CHP standards, correctional healthcare best practices, and applicable regulations. The NP works collaboratively with the Medical Director, HSA, nursing staff, and mental health providers to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Provide direct patient care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for acute, chronic, and urgent medical needs.
- Conduct physical exams, complete health assessments, and manage chronic conditions according to clinical guidelines.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests (labs, imaging, etc.).
- Prescribe medications and therapeutics within the scope of practice and CHP protocols.
- Collaborate with the Medical Director and nursing team on care plans and continuity of care.
- Document all patient encounters accurately and timely manner in the EHR per policy.
- Participate in daily clinical operations to ensure timely access to care for the patient population.
- Provide education to patients on disease prevention, treatment plans, medications, and lifestyle management.
- Assist with emergency response and triage as needed.
- Participate in quality improvement (CQI), audits, and compliance activities as directed.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and professional environment consistent with correctional standards.
- Must hold and maintain an active, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of California.
- Active DEA (if prescribing controlled substances).
- National NP certification required (FNP, AGNP, etc.).
- Minimum 3-5 years of clinical experience
; correctional healthcare experience preferred but not required. - Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team in a correctional setting.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.
