UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, recognized as the gold standard for nursing excellence. The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego conducts cutting-edge research in digestive diseases and promotes scholarly investigations, teaching, service and health leadership and training.

The General Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner will provide care for patients with Advanced Endoscopy and general GI conditions. Responsibilities include comprehensive history and physical exams, ordering and reviewing diagnostic tests, formulating plans of care, collaborating with the Advanced Endoscopy team and General GI team, and triaging telephone calls and electronic messages (e.g., Epic MyChart) and outpatient referrals.

Primarily, the Nurse Practitioner will see Advanced Endoscopy clinic patients, primarily new visits, mainly from the external referral pool. The NP will assist the Advanced Endoscopy team with triaging referrals and helping reduce patient wait times.

The NP may see these patients in an Expedited Care Clinic (ECC) format or as formal new consults. Assists in coverage for General GI ECC as needed. Responsible for seeing urgent post-procedure advanced patients. The NP will not be responsible for inpatient care but may assist with certain physician orders. Other duties assigned as needed.

• Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

• California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

• Current Nurse Practitioner Specialty Certification in an aligned specialty with the practice area from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

• BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

• Minimum of one (1) year of licensed NP experience working in Gastroenterology.

• Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.

• Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams and procedures, e.g., laboratory blood tests, x-rays, EKGs, biopsies and GI endoscopies.

• Knowledge of clinical laboratory values and skill in identifying deviations.

• Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic for retrieval of patient data (PCIS/Epic preferred).

• Demonstrated experience working in a clinical research environment. Ability to identify potential clinical trials patients.

• Demonstrated experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long and short range treatment plans.

• Knowledge of study formats, with the ability to edit charts and resolve inconsistencies.

• Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining a concise medical history and acquiring pertinent data.

• Demonstrated experience in research techniques, such as following a protocol, and in collecting all data precisely.
