Overview
UC San Diego Health is seeking an Advanced Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) for the UCSD Stroke Center. The ACNP will expand all facets of clinical stroke care in the medical facilities, contribute to teaching and research missions, and serve as a key member of the Neurovascular inpatient stroke service. The position works under general supervision of the Director of the Neurovascular Stroke Care Service and other designated practitioner team members.
The ACNP provides nurse practitioner support within the Neurovascular inpatient stroke service and collaborates with clinical faculty, fellows, residents, and staff to deliver high-level neurovascular stroke care in an evidence-based academic practice, both in-house and via telestroke. Responsibilities include medical management of complex ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, post-thrombectomy, and other vascular neurology-related diagnoses within the hospitals.
Responsibilities- Provide continuity of care on inpatient stroke wards and inpatient consult services, delivering evidence-based stroke management for a diverse patient population.
- Acuately evaluate, treat, and manage acute "Stroke Code" patients in the Emergency Departments for thrombolytic therapy, embolectomy, and research treatment decisions.
- Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage stroke patients; interpret relevant labs and imaging with appropriate scope of practice.
- Contribute to teaching and research missions; develop and provide education to NP students, nurses, medical students, interns, residents, and fellows.
- Serve as liaison to counselors, social workers, research nurses, and family members of stroke patients; assist in orientation and training of residents.
- Develop and implement policy and procedures related to the management of stroke patients.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program;
California RN license, California NP license, and Furnishing License Certification. - Current Acute Care NP Certification (AGACNP or ACNP).
- BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within 6 months of hire date.
- Minimum two (2) years licensed NP experience, including inpatient critical care experience.
- Demonstrated experience or working knowledge of stroke or neurovascular patient care.
- Strong background in anatomy, physiology, neurosciences, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency or critical care medicine, pharmacology, or related areas.
- Ability to perform initial history and physical examination and formulate appropriate plans of action.
- Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized electronic system (e.g., EPIC).
- Ability to analyze and interpret data accurately; operate medical equipment and be trained in specialized equipment.
- Knowledge to instruct house staff, medical students, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel in surgical care aspects.
- Ability to assess daily status and progress of patients and report findings to physicians and care personnel.
- Excellent writing skills to prepare medical reports, data, and progress notes; create policies and protocols as needed.
- Excellent time and project management; manage a large volume of patients efficiently.
- Ability to write orders for inpatient or outpatient treatment plans.
- Ability to counsel patients and families compassionately, especially in delicate or end-of-life situations.
- Excellent communication and confidentiality skills; HIPAA-compliant interactions with diverse populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently or in a team with diverse staff and patients.
- Fluency in English and Spanish (oral and written).
- Experience in clinical research trials.
- Knowledge of UCSD Medical Center clinical and ancillary services.
- CITI certification in HIPAA, Human Subjects, and Good Clinical Practice; other trial protocol trainings.
- Training or certification in the clinical management of Stroke Neurology patients.
- This role rotates between the Hillcrest and La Jolla locations.
