Under the direction of the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Director of Operations, this role supervises Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) within the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery division.
In addition to the supervisory responsibilities outlined below, this position will provide care in the fields of Cardiothoracic Surgery/Intensive Care Units in collaboration with physicians. Clinical care responsibilities will include comprehensive clinical support in the management of inpatient and outpatient care and procedures, plans, implements and evaluates healthcare treatments for cardiac and thoracic surgery patients. Provides patient care on specific surgical in- and out-patient services.
The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the cardiothoracic surgical patient, from pre- to peri- to post-op settings. Participates in ongoing research and/or quality assurance studies. Functions as liaison to counselors, social workers, research nurses. Position requires special knowledge, skills and abilities in the fields of cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and wound care.
Supervisory responsibilities include:- Overseeing APPs (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) in daily operations of all areas including Outpatient Clinic care coordination.
- Inpatient floor patient care coverage, and OR staffing support for both Cardiac and Thoracic APPs who assist our Faculty during surgical procedures.
- Ensuring adherence to ethics and quality standards in the delivery of patient care by Advanced Practice Providers
- Collaborating with senior management on operational and performance issues and the development of new plans and programs to improve and integrate APP functions and systems across specialties, departments and throughout the medical center, including the development and implementation of APP Best Practice Models.
- Ensuring appropriate professional development opportunities are developed and implemented.
As a supervisor, receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them. The position will function as a working supervisor position with both clinical and administrative duties.
Depending on the credentials of the selected candidate, this position will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Must be a graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- NP: Current California RN license, Nurse Practitioner license, and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification.
- PA: Current California Physician Assistant (PA) license and current PA Certification from NCCPA.
- BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
- A minimum three (3) years of recent work experience as a licensed advanced practice provider (NP or PA) in a surgical or procedural setting.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a nurse practitioner.
- Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for advanced practice providers performing advanced-practice duties within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics issues, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development.
- Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.
- Solid written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
- Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by nurse practitioners in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision.
