Stewardship Saturday in Olivia Canyon
Join Olivia Canyon neighbors, community volunteers, and San Diego Canyonlands for this stewardship event in the canyon as part of their restoration efforts. Help them create a healthy habitat for wildlife and a safe place for recreation in the City Heights community of San Diego. We want to ensure that our canyons in San Diego will remain a place where people and wildlife are healthy and safe.
ProjectRequirements & Important Notes
Key Responsibilities
- Care for and maintain native plants
- Remove invasive plant species
- Collect and remove trash and debris
- Assist with general stewardship tasks that help restore and protect the canyon ecosystem
- Interest in environmental stewardship and community-based conservation
- Comfortable working outdoors in canyon terrain and sunny conditions
- Ability to hike short distances on uneven ground
- Ability to bend, kneel and perform ground-level tasks
- Comfortable removing weeds by hand and using basic hand tools
- Ability to follow instructions, safety guidelines, and project expectations
Training Provided: On-site training provided at the beginning of the shift.
Signing Up: Please sign up on San Diego Canyonlands' website in addition to signing up on Hands On San Diego. Please refer to our Instagram page @sdcanyonlands for any changes or location updates.
Attire: Wear sturdy shoes or boots (closed-toe shoes are required), comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty (long pants), and a hat for sun protection.
Bring: Water bottle and sunscreen. Tools and gloves are provided.
Waiver: Volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a youth waiver to participate in their events.
Physical Requirements: These events are flexible, but we ask that volunteers are comfortable with hiking short distances, bending, and physically removing weeds with hands and tools.
Safety: San Diego Canyonlands kindly asks that volunteers please wear a mask if social distancing from others outside your social pod cannot be maintained. Thank you for your respect and understanding.
Weather: They rarely cancel due to weather. If necessary, the event will be canceled morning of the project.
Note: There are no bathrooms on site. Feel free to contact San Diego Canyonlands at volunteer with any questions before the event.
