Job Description

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for an Aircraft Mechanic 3 or 4 – Structures to join our team at MCAS Miramar, CA. The selected individual will perform duties as part of a Contract Field Team (CFT) responsible for depot‑level modifications performed at Department of Navy locations. This position may be filled as either an Aircraft Mechanic 3 or 4 depending on the candidate’s qualifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and modify structural aircraft components and composite parts, ensuring precise fit and adhering to strict tolerances.
  • Install detail parts such as shims, splices, gussets, angles, brackets, doublers, and patches.
  • Modify major structural components (ribs, stiffeners, longerons, straps, skins) and composite assemblies using shop aids.
  • Apply expert knowledge of bonding practices, procedures, and layouts to achieve exact fits, especially where critical surface contours, edge distances, or coordinated dimensions and tolerances to 0.005” must be maintained.
  • Determine efficient fabrication and assembly methods for bonding operations.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and structure repair manuals, including understanding symbols, flags, and general notes.
  • Identify aircraft locations by station, butt‑line, and waterline as shown on engineering documentation and technical orders.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and standard scales.
  • Demonstrate extensive experience with tools including drills, angle motors, shears, drill press, and pneumatic riveter.
  • Work with a variety of aircraft materials, including aluminum, steel, titanium, plastic, and advanced composites.
  • Verify low observable (LO) materials for conformity to specifications and determine required repairs.
  • Set up and operate material testers and mixers.
  • Wear PPE as required to safely perform job tasks.
  • Provide temporary support to other CFT locations at MCAS Beaufort, MCAS Cherry Point, and NAS Lemoore as needed.
  • Document completed maintenance, parts tags, logs/records, parts requests, etc.
  • Comply with all health and safety rules, tool control, FOD control, Haz Mat handling procedures, and training and certification requirements.
  • Work a flexible schedule that may include extended shifts, holidays, weekends, and on‑call status 24/7/365.
Basic Qualifications
  • Aircraft Mechanic 3:
    High school diploma or GED + 4 years of applied or related experience (or equivalent education).
  • Aircraft Mechanic 4:
    High school diploma or GED + 6 years of applied or related experience (or equivalent education).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting schematics, assembly drawings, process specifications, technical manuals, written instructions, and test procedures.
  • Ability to obtain or maintain a final adjudicated government Secret clearance and any required program access within a reasonable period of time.
  • Ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical work including bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting items up to 50 pounds, and working overhead.
  • Access to small, confined spaces and capability to work in enclosed environments.
  • Pass a New Hire Physical prior to start.
  • Pass medical/respiratory evaluation to obtain and maintain necessary respirator clearance and compliance with all respirator fitting requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • DoD Intermediate level sheet metal/structures/airframes experience, or commercial/industry equivalent.
