The Head of Oncology Program Management leads the development and execution of a world-class program management organization responsible for driving the end-to-end delivery of Pfizer’s Oncology portfolio—from early research and lead development through clinical development, commercialization, and eventual loss of exclusivity. This leader oversees a team of senior Program Management Team Leaders and approximately 50 Global Program Managers across global sites, ensuring effective cross-functional integration of strategy, operations, and execution.
In partnership with Early and Late Development, Clinical Operations, Regulatory, Commercial, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Global Access, and other senior stakeholders, the Head of PM is accountable for achieving key portfolio milestones including FIH, SOCA, POC, pivotal study starts, regulatory submissions, and approvals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervision, Talent Development:
Deliver quality supervision, performance management, and personal development for GPMs; provide mentorship and leadership development for PM Group leads; ensure GPMs have strong leadership, project management skills and competencies to drive delivery of assets from LD to LOE; recruit, retain, and develop top talent in Program Management; coach GPMs to drive value-driven decision making; be accountable for the performance of GPMs. - Compliance:
Establish and communicate standards for quality of Asset PM deliverables; ensure compliance with Pfizer policies, standards, and local laws and regulations; determine PM P2L training curriculum and endorsements. - Project Management Excellence and Vision:
Develop PM department vision; align and motivate staff; serve as central point of accountability and SME for key PM areas (e.g., Risk Management, Submissions, Business Development, Alliance Management, Early Development, End-to-End Development roadmap, Team Health); develop and implement PM competency models and practices; evolve PM roles and onboarding materials; network across PM groups to share best practices. - Partner Line and Stakeholder Management:
Establish interfaces among Partner Line Leaders to drive program delivery; resolve line conflicts; guide China and Japan Category PM Leadership for global inclusion; optimize team performance and resource allocation; define cross-functional processes and metrics. - TA/Category Program Lead:
Lead delivery of major asset milestones within the category (FIH, SOCA, POC, Pivotal Start, Submission, Approval); partner with senior leadership to stand up organizational constructs, governance, and TA strategy; coordinate with Oncology PM and PRD PM to align platform resources. - Operational Delivery:
Ensure GPMs lead asset delivery, manage risk, assess development scenarios, and deliver key milestones; ensure high-quality governance interactions and portfolio reporting; may directly manage programs for GPTs or other initiatives when needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 15+ years of experience managing multiple, highly complex projects and portfolio governance; 5+ years of Oncology Pharma PM experience.
- Broad knowledge of project management methodologies, principles, and tools; strong technical experience in drug development; knowledge of late-stage commercial issues.
- Proven ability to negotiate in a highly matrixed organization; experience as a functional line manager with leadership in project management.
- Track record of implementing PM practices and process improvements; budgetary management and fiscal awareness; education in drug development disciplines.
