Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for providing strategic leadership and governance for EHS programs across multiple BDB sites. This position serves as the strategic EHS leader for BD Biosciences, ensuring regulatory compliance, leading cross‑site EHS initiatives, developing talent, and enabling business continuity and operational excellence. This role partners with executive and site leadership teams to embed EHS principles into operations, drive cultural transformation, and elevate organizational maturity.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership – Develop and implement the multi‑site EHS strategy aligned with corporate and business unit objectives.
  • Governance – Establish cross‑site EHS governance, policies, and frameworks that ensure consistent standards and practices.
  • Compliance – Ensure full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, Cal/OSHA, DOT, etc.), as well as BD corporate requirements.
  • People Leadership – Lead, coach, and develop a team of EHS professionals across multiple sites, ensuring capability growth, succession planning, and high engagement.
  • Risk Management – Anticipate, assess, and mitigate EHS risks protecting employees, operations, and reputation and integrate EHS into business continuity planning.
  • Performance & Analytics – Define and monitor key performance indicators (leading and lagging) for EHS across sites. Leverage digital platforms (Intelex, iAuditor, Smartsheet, etc.) to generate predictive insights and mitigation strategies.
  • Continuous Improvement – Lead cross‑site initiatives that reduce risk, improve compliance, and embed a proactive safety culture.
  • Emergency Preparedness – Oversee multi‑site emergency response programs, drills, and crisis management planning.
  • Stakeholder Engagement – Represent EHS in leadership forums, regulatory inspections, industry groups, and community engagements.
  • Change Leadership – Drive cultural transformation and alignment across sites, ensuring EHS is integrated into everyday business practices. Lead and provide any additional EHS support as needed in support of advancing the objectives of the BU.
Education & Experience
  • Required:

    Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related field.
  • Preferred:
    Master’s degree and/or advanced EHS certifications (CSP, CIH, CHMM).
  • 10+ years of progressive EHS experience, including 5+ years in leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated success managing multi‑site EHS programs in manufacturing, life sciences, or similarly complex highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of advanced EHS frameworks (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, OSHA VPP, etc.).
  • Proven track record in organizational transformation, risk reduction, and leadership development.
Basic Knowledge and Skills
  • Microsoft Office and EHS digital platforms (Intelex, iAuditor, Smartsheet)
  • Incident reporting systems, environmental compliance, permitting, and reporting.
Advanced / Specialized Skills
  • Strategic planning, governance frameworks, and cross‑site program design.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with ability to translate data into insights.
  • Executive communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to lead organizational changes, conflict resolution, and team development.
  • In‑depth expertise in OSHA, EPA, DOT, Cal/OSHA, and other relevant regulations.
Work Environment
  • Responsible for cultivating a culture of EHS excellence and continuous improvement across multiple sites.
  • Measurable improvement in safety performance, including reductions in incident rates and systemic risk indicators.
